Wellington – Run to Gladstone Sunday 29th June
Bad weather was predicted for our drive to the Gladstone Inn for lunch and we received a few apologies during Saturday and early Sunday before we set off for the meeting point. Two other cars arrived soon after us, so three cars and five people set off over the Rimutakas. The weather wasn’t nearly as bad as we’d expected and although a bit wet it was calm.
We stopped in Featherston, where Paula and Nigel had a very welcome log fire going, and had a chat over coffee from Cornucopia next door. The drive over to Martinborough (where it was dry and sunny) and on to the Gladstone Inn, on traffic-free roads, was uneventful. We had booked 16 for lunch and I don’t think we were the only group to down size or cancel, but they took it in their stride. The seven of us had an enjoyable lunch, and after a couple of hours shooting the breeze it was time to move on again. Dave very optimistically lowered his Z’s hood as we were about to leave but promptly put it up again as it started to drizzle.
The drive home was in light rain and we didn’t pick up the wind until Silverstream. All in all it was a worthwhile day out, spending it in good company in the Z and in the Wairarapa, and away from a windy Wellington.
Sorry, too drizzly for photos of this trip, but cars were all Z3’s – two silver, one blue and one black, made up of two 1.9s and two 2.8s.
