Kawau Island 15 April 2012
After such a beautiful sunny day on the 14th we were certain the 15th would be the same if not better. I got up early and as soon as it was light I checked the sky and hmmm "surely all that cloud would be burnt off by 9am"....... no it wouldn’t be! It was a weird day but we can’t complain as we didn’t get rained on when out of the cars which was a bonus.
At 8.45am 25 of us met at the BP Connect Dairy Flat. I must admit after racing there and fuelling (only to remember after filling the tank with over $100 of fuel that my fuel card was SHELL) and not being able to find one of our newest members, that I did wonder about the success of the proposed day.
However, 25 wonderful people finally made contact and we jumped in our cars and headed north. Carol, Paulie, Graham, Judy, Sharlene, Kevin, Christine, Keith, Robyn, Ken, Veena, Belinda, Pat, Cam, Diana, Jackie, Joh, Owen and myself were joined by our new members Jim, Yvonne, Chris, Janet, Mark and Suzanne.
We had received apologies from Desre and Brian as they sold their house yesterday and needed to buy another today so we let them off.
Missing was Peter. He turned up as we parked at Sandspit. He has been dubbed Peter Missing now as he has been so keen to join our outings he turned up a week early for the last one, couldn’t come on the actual day as he cracked a rib and tried to come to today’s run 3 weeks early so when we finally got to meet today it was very nice and also a relief. I think he enjoys his new nickname :)
Once we got parked we chatted before boarding the 10.30am ferry out to the island.
Still the rain held off. Sat on the top deck and got some wind burn and some great scenery. Our captain was informative and we called into a few other wharfs to drop off or collect people and supplies before disembarking at Mansion House wharf.
The island is beautiful. The area around the Mansion House is an ideal place for picnics and relaxing. Most of us wandered to the cafe (my mistake folks as I was sure it was actually in Mansion House not across the lawns) and had a leisurely lunch and caught up with everyone. Some did one of the walks the island is famous for and we met later at the wharf for the 2pm ferry back to Sandspit. Those who went through Mansion House were impressed.
The cruise back was windy and cool but still no rain. Back to our cars and most of us headed off to meet at Puhoi pub for a nice cool drink before heading back into the traffic and on home.
Nice day and a chance for many to see the island and for all of us to catch up again.
Till next time,
Pauline :)
